REGIONAL UPDATE FROM THE STAFF OF STARBASE 7, R7 Command By Adm. Bob Vosseller, Vice Regional Coordinator, Region 7 Thursday, July 22, 2010
SHORE LEAVE 32 STARFLEET-REGION 7 Meeting – Here's another recap of the annual Starfleet-R7 meeting that was heldon the morning of July 10 in the Chase Room of the Hunt Valley Marriott Hotel, Maryland during Shore Leave 32. It was VERY well attended. An R7 Command staff meeting was held the night before.
Saturday morning’s meeting was headed by RC Wayne Augustson, Chief of Staff Jeff Victor and I. We welcomed everyone to our crowded and humid gathering point. Yeah next year we will make arrangements for a larger venue. Hopefully one that will have working AC.
I thanked those who came out to enjoy the region’s first group breakfast that was held at the hotel’s Cinnamon Tree restaurant an hour earlier. Everyone enjoyed a good meal and reported on the lunacy of the night before and also shared some of the horror stories concerning hotel issues that took place earlier in the weekend.
Wayne announced during the meeting that the regional Shoc Office would be better utilized more and that Shoc Officer Jim Pugilese will be involved more closely in pre-launch procedures prior to a chapter in training being sign off by the RC’s office.
It has also been decided that as the work of the sector chiefs has been primarily accomplished through other staff members that the positions would be eliminated and that those serving in those roles will have the opportunity to instead serve as sector recruiters to their respective states, working with the R7 Recruitment Office. The positions will officially cease as of Sept. 30.
Recruitment materials used at Shore Leave saw an upgrade thanks to Assistant Recruiting Officer Mike Allen. A recruiting effort spearheaded by the USS Challenger and aided by other area chapters will take part in August at a Creation Con in New Jersey.
Further work is to be performed soon on the R7 website and we are encouraging submissions of short articles on individual chapter events along with photos for inclusion on the website.
R7 Command also reminded members of the 7th Fleet that on Sat. Sept 25 the first ever Command Summit will be held at the Double TreeHotel in Mount Laurel NJ (smack dab in the middle of the region) from 9 a.m. to5 pm. The event is FREE and we are hoping to get at least 50 attendees. The programs will be designed for those in command positions, cos, xos, section chiefs but it is open to everyone.
Among the topics to be discussed include regional events, how to plan regional events, motivating your crew, fostering leadership from your crew, delegating duties of a command staff, and if you have anything you wan tto see happen there please contact Wayne, Jeff or I. We want to hear your ideas on panel/workshop topics. A group lunch/dinner will be part of the activity, everyone being responsible for the cost of their meal.
Jeff announced that a webinar of an hour and a half length will beheld sometime in September concerning how to plan a regional conference. It will also be touched on at the command summit.
During the meeting the first of a series of special commercials was screened concerning next year’s Starfleet International Conference which is being hosted by the USS Challenger. Registrations were taken during the weekend and during the Challenger’s milkshake mixer that was held on Saturday night. Aug.3 is the deadline for early registration at the $20 level. Book now for that rate.
Wayne reminded chapters that Starfleet is cracking down on ships under strength, failing to send in their MSRs and other criteria. If your chapter has membership problems or other issues, you’ve been contacted already but let us know what you plan to do to address these issues and what R7 Command can do to assist. Promotions: Newly commissioned USS Iwo Jima CO John Slavin was promoted to Brigadier General. The Iwo Jima held a“chaptering party’’ (as John coined a new phrase) on Saturday night complete with cake. The region applauded the 7th Fleet’s new addition.
